The Sri Lankan East coast with its the waves, the beaches and the golden tropical sun has been attracting tourists from around.

Trincomalee

The port town of Trincomalee, famed for its natural harbour ranked 5th largest in the world, holds great beauty and history. Once the base for Portuguese, Dutch and English colonists, it was admired by Lord Nelson in 1770 aboard the HMS Seashore, as one of the finest harbours in the world. Tourist attractions include the one and half centuries old Fort Federick, with cliffy Swarmi rock with a the sad love story revolving around it. Atop the rock is the highly venerated Thirukoneswaram Kovil. The sports enthusiast can go fishing and angling as well as whale watching, but in going diving and swimming please consider advice by lifeguards and hotel personnel.

Nilaveli Beach

A 15 km beach stretching from Uppuvli to Nilaveli. Located close to Trincomalee, this sub bathing destination holds crystal blue waters and white beaches. Attractions close by include the Red Rock Beach – an estuary perch and pinkish colour boulders.

Pigeon Island

Lying 2km off the coast of Nilaveli is the diving, snorkeling and sea bathing destination – Pigeon island. Having taken a boat ride across to get to the island, visit the Marine Park and feast your eyes on rare corals and marine animals as well as endemic and migrant birds.

Batticaloa

A coastal town gifted with a very charming lagoon located 314 km east of Colombo, fast becoming a thriving tourist destination spotted with holiday villas as well as upcoming star class hotels, it is known for its ‘singing fish’ and picturesque lagoon.

Kalkudah and Pasekudah

Protected by the calm reef, Kalkudah in the east coast is located 32km from Batticaloa and is renowned as a sea bathing destination. While Kalkudah faces the east, Pasekudah beach faces the north and is gifted with calm and clear waters and sandy beaches, a location ideal for windsurfers, water skiers as well as divers.

Arugambay

Located in the south east, is a surfer’s haven and one of the top ten surfer’s spots in the world, having made a mark on ASP World Tour calendar. Famed for body boarding, beginner/intermediate surfing and long boarding and now for kite-surfing, you can enjoy your ride at three points: The Point (for bigger breaks), Pottuvil Point and Crocodile Rock. Be ready to walk on foot, take a tuk tuk or hire a boat to get to the best places to surf. Located close to Lahugala National Park (famed for elephants) and Yala East National Park as well as must see places in a Bird Watcher’s map, Pottuvil lagoon and Kumana Bird Sanctuary.
